Our History

The State of Qatar is a peninsula projecting into the Arabian Gulf waters with a unique heritage from the past centuries which has transformed itself into a vibrant, dynamic and modern society under the able leadership of the Emir His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. The progress throughout the years has translated itself into one of the most developed and peaceful nations within the region, as well as the world. Qatar’s visionary leadership has also paved way for the creation of its free education and health care. From the very early years, Indian doctors, both in the private and governmental sectors have participated in the educational and scientific progress of the nation.

Formation of the Indian Doctors Club – Qatar

The Indian Doctors club was formed in the early 1990’s, thanks to H.E. Mr.K.P. Fabian, then Ambassador who took the bold step of inviting all doctors to his home at the constant persuasion of senior doctors of the fraternity including Dr Thomas, Dr Iyer and Dr Malini to pledge the support of Embassy to form IDC.

The group nominated Dr. Usha Bhatt as its first president, Dr.K.M.R. Mathew as the Vice president, Dr. Sridharan Iyer, as the secretary and Dr. Abraham Kolamanna as the treasurer of newly formed Club. Senior members Dr N.S Bhatt, Dr Vishnu Bhat, Dr.K.M Das, Dr Mohan Thomas, Dr Arun K P, Dr Susan Mathew, Dr.K.M.R Mathew to name a few, delivered regular lectures of importance pertaining to their specialties.

As the club progressed, renowned speakers from India such as Prof B M. Hegde, Dr K. M Cherian, Dr S. Natarajan and others were invited to chair educational sessions. Later, school educational talks, student career guidance counseling and conduct of medical camps were incorporated into the club’s activities as part of its social commitment to the community.

The progress of the Indian Doctors club was whole heartedly supported by Dr Malini Chandrasekaran, Dr Pushpa Gurumadhavan, Dr Hilda Helen, Dr Susan Mathew and many others thus strengthening its social framework.

With the growing number of Indian Doctors, the incumbent team of office bearers of the IDC, including Dr Sridharan Iyer a dentist, took it upon themselves to forge an alliance with the Indian Medical Association HQ, New Delhi. The ceaseless and concerted efforts of the team with the encouragement of the embassy of India at Qatar, and in particular ,Dr Ashok Amrohi (Counselor-Political) himself a doctor, was rewarded and led to the creation of the Indian Medical Association, Qatar Chapter, as the first foreign unit of the IMA.

On 14th May 1999, at the Doha Sheraton Hotel, the Hon General Secretary of the Indian Medical Association, Dr Prem Aggarwal inaugurated the Qatar chapter, in the presence of the then Indian ambassador Mr. R.L Narayan. The charter was handed over to the President Elect Dr K.M.R Mathew.
